I have always approached design as if were the first time I had ever thought about a project.  The primary goal for me is not to design a derivative of another genre, but to give every piece a fresh perspective and allow it to make its own statement.  This is not to say that I don't find inspiration from other elements of traditional design, or to explore serial design challenges in my work, but I try to take that inspiration in a new direction every time.  Each piece needs to have a sculptural presence for what may be a utilitarian function.  If I am successful, I have created a piece of art that is well crafted, useful and fun for many generations.  At the very least, I plan for my sculptural furniture to outlast its maker and represent him in the future as an artist and artisan.
